Digital Inkjet Printing

Digital inkjet printing is used to produce full-color posters and indoor point-of-purchase signage on photographic paper, film, vinyl, cloth, or plastic. A digital inkjet printer produces prints with a high resolution, so the pixel resolution of an image should be 200 dpi, instead of 72 dpi, so that images will appear clearly when printed.

You need a compatible computer system to produce such images. Today's computers, with the latest Pentium processors, RAM capacities of 128MB and above, and hard disk capacities of 30 to 40 GB and above, are powerful enough to handle high-resolution images. To produce digital inkjet prints, you need a 24-bit 600 x 600-in optical color scanner, which is very economical. You also need a raster image processing application, to handle color calibration and pattern selection, and a printer driver, to enable the computer and printer to communicate.

When you print a standard 3 x 5-in photo using a digital inkjet printer, your file should be at least 10MB or 20MB in size. For larger images, in the 36 or 48 inches range, file sizes of 300 dpi to 400 dpi are ideal.

You will need an image editing software to manipulate the brightness and contrast levels in an image. You will also have to match the colors on the computer with the colors produced in the digital inkjet print. This color adjustment function is carried out automatically by image processing programs and printer drivers.
